Which is $1,000 iphone with a better camera — iPhone 14 Pro or Galaxy Z Flip 4?

iPhone 14 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 are very different smartphones. Try folding an iPhone like the Z Flip 4 and it will all end in tears.

Yet if you have $1,000 to spend, these two sit on the shelves next to each other, and that makes comparing them an interesting proposition.

Both are very tempting, just for different reasons. Can camera performance help make a decision easier?

iPhone 14 Pro vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Camera specs

A pair of 12-megapixel cameras live on the back of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, covering both main and wide-angle duties.

The main camera has optical image stabilization and an f/1.8 aperture, while the wide-angle camera has a 123-degree field of view.

There’s no telephoto camera, but Samsung offers a 10x digital zoom feature. However, it doesn’t make a big deal and doesn’t add a shortcut to the Camera app.

iPhone 14 Pro has a 48MP main camera with second-generation optical image stabilization and an f/1.78 aperture, which is joined by a 12MP wide-angle camera and a 12MP telephoto with 2x and 3x optical zoom.

On the software side, Apple loads up its new Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion and Smart HDR4 features. The 12MP selfie camera also uses these features, while the Samsung phone’s screen.

On paper, the iPhone 14 Pro has more impressive specifications and the optical zoom feature will make it more versatile. Can this apparent superiority carry over to a decisive victory?

iPhone 14 Pro vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Main camera

The main camera test results show that the iPhone 14 Pro isn’t going to test itself, as the Z Flip 4 takes some really great photos.

Maybe not technically as good, but with its latest phones, Samsung has gotten the saturation levels right and pops just right — taking very shareable photos that have instant appeal.

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

The picture of the car shows what I mean. The photo on the iPhone 14 Pro is more realistic, has more accurate colors and better exposure.

But the Z Flip 4’s photos pack more visual punch, with brighter colors and more saturation. Zoom in, and the level of detail is the same in each, but the Z Flip 4 loses the complex textures seen in iPhone photos.

Also check out the canal photo, where the grass is more vibrant and the sky less oppressive in the Z Flip 4’s photo.

The image of the iPhone 14 Pro is close to what I’ve seen with my own eyes, but it doesn’t have the Samsung pop.

iPhone Photo is obviously technically superior, but that doesn’t always matter when you want to share a photo quickly.

Finally, the flower photo shows that the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s love of bright colors and overexposure really hurt the final image.

Although I love the brightness showing the brickwork and the texture of the baskets, the flowers are red and not orange, creating a very different scene from real life.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s consistent natural tones and balanced colors mean it always delivers a strong photo, and I love the depth of field it creates.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4’s camera can take great photos, and I found it very easy to share without a second thought, but the consistency and realism of the iPhone 14 Pro has to win.

Winner: Apple iPhone 14 Pro

iPhone 14 Pro vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Wide-angle camera

Wide-angle cameras tell a similar story. The Z Flip 4 produces bright, colorful photos that aren’t particularly subtle when viewed alongside the iPhone 14 Pro’s natural, small images.

The iPhone photo of the bridge over the canal is atmospheric with a natural look, but at the expense of a blown-out sky. The vibrant greens of the Z Flip 4 overwhelm the image.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

The iPhone’s wide-angle photos have less edge distortion, and the Z Flip 4’s photos show very little stretching, especially in tree trunks.

So this lack of distortion is also visible in the church photo, where the grass looks normal on the iPhone image but stretched and blurry on the Z Flip 4.

It should be noted that the Z Flip 4’s wide-angle camera has a larger field of view.

Obviously, the treatment of the sky is also different, and a return to Samsung phones’ love of creating a vivid and exciting image at the cost of realism.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

The last photo here shows again where the Z Flip 4’s camera can produce eye-popping photos where reality doesn’t really matter.

The sign is legible, green in colour, and although it could use some toning, the scene is much more attractive than the iPhone’s dull, almost wintry look.

The iPhone 14 Pro will take the win due to the lack of distortion and often getting the tone of the scene right, but the photos won’t be to everyone’s liking.

That’s where the Z Flip 4 comes in, and while its main and wide-angle cameras aren’t technically adept, they really do offer an iPhone alternative.

Winner: Apple iPhone 14 Pro

iPhone 14 Pro vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Telephoto Camera

It only takes one example to see the difference between the iPhone 14 Pro’s 3x optical zoom and the Z Flip 4’s 3x digital zoom.

It’s not a fair fight, and to Samsung’s credit, it hasn’t added a digital 3x zoom quick shortcut to the viewfinder – so it doesn’t really want you to start zooming.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

There’s a good reason because the photos it takes aren’t very good. The bridge is recognisable and the colours are fine, plus it’s effectively exposed enough, but the overall image is pixelated and noisy.

It is very clear that the photo was taken with a digital zoom. The iPhone 14 Pro’s telephoto camera is probably the best, or most advanced.

This camera is better than any previous generation phone. Moreover, the photos it takes are fantastic. One more thing to say, don’t use the Z Flip 4’s digital zoom if you want good photos.

Winner: Apple iPhone 14 Pro

iPhone 14 Pro vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Night Mode

Night mode is where the test gets really interesting, as both have distinct strengths and weaknesses.

The first photo shows where the Z Flip 4 can sometimes win out over the iPhone 14 Pro, with a sharper, less noisy photo.

Flags and glitter balls are more defined, lack the brickwork sharpness from the iPhone photo, and are also slightly brighter.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

But the second photo shows where the Samsung phone falls down, with a warm image that isn’t as balanced as the iPhone image.

So it really shows that the Z Flip 4 relies on smoothing in some night mode shots.

The iPhone avoids all of this with excellent white balance, less noise, more texture and a more realistic overall tone.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

These results mostly tracked across low-light photos and seemed to come down to the amount of available light.

The iPhone prefers darker conditions, but the Z Flip 4 lets a little more light and photos are much better. Neither has perfect photos, so it’s a draw.

However, I expect that Apple will soon improve its night mode with a software update, given its recent release, and Samsung may take a little longer to improve the camera.

Winner: Draw

iPhone 14 Pro vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Portrait mode

The Galaxy Z Fold 4’s portrait mode is much better at isolating objects, working with short distances, and has a better sense of what should and shouldn’t be in focus.

It’s more versatile than the iPhone’s portrait mode, which prefers to find faces rather than objects. That’s fine, but I like being able to use mods for everything, not just people.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

This simple photo of the Apple Watch SE 2 on my wrist illustrates where the iPhone 14 Pro often gets it wrong.

It can’t tear everything apart like the Z Flip 4, which even manages to make my arm hair stand on edge.

So I much prefer warmer tones. And when I took these shots, the Samsung phone immediately recognised my hand and watch.

Ultimately, the iPhone repeatedly asked me to move further away from the subject before locking up.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

The second picture of the padlock and gate shows how good the Z Flip 4’s portrait mode can be.

The entire chain is in focus, as is the U-shaped bolt above it, while the wood fades into the background very effectively.

It’s a photo you can happily share because of its natural look The iPhone 14 Pro simply cannot compete and looks clearly “fake”.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

iPhone 14 Pro vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Selfie Camera

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 may have fewer megapixels on its selfie camera, but it beats the iPhone 14 Pro in this department.

I’m consistently impressed with the selfies taken by the Z Flip 4, which captures my skin tone the way I like it. It introduces plenty of detail, and is very effective in low light.

That’s a surprise, since the iPhone is supposed to fall back on the photonic engine here, using the rear camera in low light with 3x zoom.

1. Apple iPhone 14 Pro

Selfies taken with the Z Flip 4 still have issues. Edge detection in portrait mode isn’t as good as the iPhone, and colors are often a bit less realistic, but I’ll take them when my photo is more visually pleasing to my eyes.

I love the Z Flip 4’s editing suite for selfies, with its slick background changes and adjustable light sources when you select the Studio setting.

Plus, you can use the Z Flip 4’s cover screen to take selfies with the rear camera. The phone folds to create a handy stand so you can take selfies without holding the phone.

On the other hand, Samsung’s palm gesture to activate the shutter makes it all possible. It’s the best phone with a better camera for easy selfies.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

Which one should get you $1,000?

It’s surprisingly close. The Apple iPhone 14 Pro won three categories, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 won two and the pair drew a single.

If forced to pick a winner in the Night Mode category, it would be because of the iPhone 14 Pro’s ability to use Night Mode effectively with 3x zoom, which the Galaxy Z Flip 4 can’t replicate.

But based on the photos I took for this test, it’s a draw. The iPhone 14 Pro beats the Samsung phone in three arguably the most important categories.

It’s covering the main camera, wide-angle and telephoto. But like I said, some might actually prefer the Z Flip 4’s vivid shots.

So which one should you buy? Putting the cameras aside for a moment, note that only one of these phones folds up, and that’s a huge selling point.

The Z Flip 4 is so compact when folded, but completely normal when unfolded. This design is also tied to the camera functionality, making it a really fun camera phone.

The best way to look at these two $1,000 phones. Both are two of the best phones you can buy, but there is a distinct difference in their character.

The Z Flip 4 always feels fun and exciting . Moreover, the photos it takes reflect that the iPhone 14 Pro is a more serious device. Even its photos will please those who demand quality and realism.

Before you go buy one, make sure you check out our comparison between the iPhone 13 Pro’s camera and the iPhone 14 Pro, where the results are again quite different.
