The 2023 Kia Niro lineup is the 2nd era of the Korean brand’s most power- and fuel-efficient model. Like the Niro that debuted in 2017, it is provided in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric powered versions.
On sale now, the 2023 Niro Hybrid is the least expensive, beginning at $27,785 and topping out at round $35,000 (all fees consist of a obligatory $1,295 transport fee).
With an EPA-rated gas economic system of fifty three mpg combined, it offers the legendary Toyota Prius a run for its money.
The two are extraordinary in quite a few ways, one being that the new Nero’s form is tremendously traditional despite of every having extraordinary contrasting ” air blades” at the rear.
The electric powered 2023 Niro is the most energy-efficient and quietest of the three, although it is additionally probably to be the most expensive.
Kia has now not but launched pricing for the Niro EV, which—along with the PHEV—will arrive in one to two months.
Its EPA-rated blended vary is estimated to be 253 miles. It competes with the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, as properly as the Hyundai Kona Electric, with levels of 259, 247 and 258 miles, respectively.
Consider the Niro EV our choice to the Kia Soul EV bought in different markets; That spirit will no longer come to North America.
Starting at $35,035 and topping out nearly $40,000, the 2023 Niro PHEV gives the plug-in Prius Prime stiff competition, with a 33-mile range rating that beats the Prime’s 25 miles.
The PHEV might be the same as Niro. This is estimated to be just 10 percent of overall sales, while the Niro EV is expected to deliver a full one-quarter of total sales. Hybrids come in at 65 percent.

Kia management declared that all their 3 versions will be sold worldwide. With the advent of the pricey EV6 electric crossover, every Kia dealer is now certified to sell and service its models with the plug.
We think the new Niro will perform good. This electric model has been potentially the sleeper in the lineup. However, the company can provide sufficient improvement to meet demand.
Air Blades: For Aviation and for Style
The design of the 2023 Kia Niro was previewed by the 2019 Kia Habanero electric crossover concept.
It’s notably the chevron-shaped accents in a contrasting color (silver or black) that sweep from the roof to the wheels under the rear pillars.
It’s a polarizing feature: among both journalists and viewers, some dislike it while others love it.
While many consumers will search for gasoline efficiency or all-electric power, few will likely be swayed by the new Nero’s dedication to more durable materials.
The headliner is made from recycled wallpaper, the seats include eucalyptus leaves among their materials, and the door paint is said to have a low impact on the environment. A synthetic leather-based interior is provided on the top trim.
Three Nero Force structures power the front wheels, but after that, they’re pretty isolated.
The new 2023 Niro EV seems to be the fastest of the trio, with a 64.8-kwh battery packing a 148-kw (201-hp) motor rated at 188 lb-ft of torque.
I Zero to sixty-two mph acceleration is quoted at 7.8 seconds, hardly Tesla-quick for a low-cost compact EV hatchback but decent.
2023 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid
Both hybrids use a 1.6-liter inline-4 rated at 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and a 6-speed dual-clutch direct-shift transmission.
The hybrid motor is rated at 32 kw, while the plug-in hybrid’s 11.1-kwh battery powers a 62-kw motor (41 hp more), taking output to a combined one hundred and eighty hp.
Although the PHEV EV’s minimum curb weight of 3,720 pounds is nearly four hundred pounds lighter, its 0-to-62-mph acceleration of 9.6 to 9.8 seconds is nonetheless about two seconds slower.
The hybrid is slowest at 10.4 to 10.8 seconds, and we felt it on the road. This is more apparent at dual carriageway speeds than when accelerating from a light.
2023 Kia Niro EV
The swoosh shape serves two purposes: First, they’re actually blades that channel airflow along the Nero’s sides and past the tailgate to reduce aerodynamic drag.
You have to look closely to see the inlets and outlet. They’re not easy to photograph—but it’s a clever trick.
Secondly, because Kia has ditched the third side window that made the first-generation Niro look like a sleek wagon, the contrast blade keeps the car from being just another slab-sided tall hatchback.
Eventually, they thought that it was intended. A fairly long roof spoiler disguises the tailgate rake, adding to the Niro’s upright appearance
Up front, the 2023 Niro leads with the brand’s most recent “tiger face” theme, with thin horizontal headlights connected by an accent line that reads as the slimmest grille on the road. It makes this rather tall, boxy car look wider.
The boomerang-shaped taillights are almost as thin, though from the rear, we couldn’t help but see echoes of a Ford Focus hatchback from 20 years earlier.
The three powertrain versions have less on the outside to distinguish them this time around. Only different front ends, with the EV’s charge-port door front and center below the Kia badge, separate the various Niro varieties.
Just the PHEV has a tailgate badge identifying its powertrain; it’s absent on the hybrid and EV.
2023 Kia Niro EV
Inside, the dashboard traces a single arc from door to door, over both the instrument cluster and the 10.3-inch center touchscreen display (the lowest LX hybrid uses an 8.0-inch screen).
Base hybrids have simple, all-black interiors with a conventional shift lever on the center console. At the other end of the scale, the top-trim EV models come with a rotary drive selector and two-tone interiors.
Perhaps inevitably, there are large swaths of glossy “piano black” plastic trim in all models. It’s nice to look at, but it collects dust and fingerprints quickly.
The chevron shape is repeated in parts of the interior design, including such things as the brushed-metal door handles.
While many shoppers will seek fuel efficiency or all-electric power, perhaps a few will be swayed by the new Niro’s commitment to more sustainable materials.
The headliner is made from recycled wallpaper, the seats include eucalyptus leaves among ingredients for their materials, and the door paint is said to have a lower impact on the environment. A synthetic leather interior is offered on the top trim.
All three Niro drive systems power the front wheels, but after that, they diverge considerably.
The new 2023 Niro EV feels like the quickest of the trio, with a 64.8-kwh battery pack powering a 148-kw (201-hp) motor rated at 188 lb-ft of torque.
I Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is quoted at 7.8 seconds, hardly Tesla-fast but acceptable for an affordable compact EV hatchback.
2023 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid
Both hybrids use a 1.6-liter inline-4 quoted at 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and a 6-speed dual-clutch direct-shift transmission.
The hybrid motor is rated at 32 kw, while the plug-in hybrid’s 11.1-kwh battery powers a 62-kw motor (41 hp more), that takes output to a combined 180 hp.
While the PHEV is almost 400 lb lighter than the EV’s minimum curb weight of 3,720 lb, its 0-to-62-mph acceleration of 9.6 to 9.8 seconds is still about two seconds slower.
The hybrid is slowest of all, at 10.4 to 10.8 seconds, and we felt it on the road. It’s more apparent at highway speeds than in accelerating away from a light.
It has been found that the PHEV retained 14 to 18 percent of battery charge once it switched over to hybrid mode. That keeps a large portion of the battery on hand to potentially supplement the gasoline engine, and subjectively it felt much quicker than the regular hybrid Niro.

Speed is one thing, but powertrain smoothness is another. The two hybrids can’t approach the EV for smooth, continuous, quiet power, but the shift quality in the transmission is significantly better.
Power transitions are harder to smooth in a single-motor hybrid system, where the motor can either power the car or act as a generator, but not both at the same time—unlike a Toyota or Ford’s two-motor system.
Hybrid systems from Hyundai-Kia started off rough, but they’re now approaching the smoothness of two-motor systems. That’s saying something.
All Neros have a “Drive Mode” button in the lower left corner of the steering wheel hub. The PHEV has a console button that offers the choice of Auto, Hybrid or EV power.
A combination of Hybrid and Sport modes allows drivers to conserve battery charge for later use. The PHEV also has a left pedal that allows for a higher level of regenerative braking.
Only EVs offer the “i-Pedal” one-pedal driving option. In our early-production test car, it occasionally wouldn’t activate, and Kia wasn’t yet able to say why.
2023 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid
Neither Niro is particularly sporty in terms of handling or roadholding. Driving all three back-to-back highlights how difficult it is to equip a car with three different powertrains whose weight distribution varies considerably (the Honda Clarity was worse in that respect).
Spacious head room and leg room
We drove the Niro EV first, and found it to be the smoothest, quietest version—just as we’d hoped. It’s the quietest yet, with impressive noise suppression for a moderately priced compact EV.
Interior room is still basically good for a tall compact hatch. (We can’t consider it a utility vehicle without available all-wheel drive, which isn’t offered.)
My 6-6-6 co-driver positioned himself right next to the driver’s side, but North couldn’t boss himself in—even though I tried at 5-foot-11.
A flaw in the rear seat results in the seat’s addressable parts being reinforced plastic, which means it’s not offered to accommodate riders’ knees.
The wheel passes, the controls are done with and explained, the knob for the strongest power.
Kia-graphics and infotainment international are among the better designs in the business, and the Niro EV would be much easier for a one-person electric-car driver with a central touchscreen controlled by Tesla.

The Niro-load floor is relatively high, but the Hybrid and EV’s cargo volume is respectable: 22.8 cubic feet with the rear seats up, and 63.7 cubic feet with the second saddle folded flat.
That falls to 19.4 cu ft and 54.6 cu ft for the PHEV, with its larger hybrid battery expanding the battery bay.
The EV-battery is on the floor of the cabin, exposing a few feet of deep rise for north-side riders, and some floors on the opposite side.
Admirably, the Niro EV has impressive storage space. A bare plastic molding that’s not visible with anything like the balling of the cover.
It has a shallow tread that’s thought to be the determinant that would suit a politician, a party handbag, or a large canvas gear with squashable content.
Standard security measures
All models come with Kia’s so-called “DriveWise” bundle of driver-assistance systems, which package a system with individual safety features.
These include Bly-Spot Monitor and Bellandor cross-traffic safety, driver-attention alert, adaptive cruise control (all models except SLX), automatic high beams and automatic emergency braking.
Highway Drive Assist II system with active assistance in adaptive cruise controlBut the driver has to keep his hands on the steering wheel; It’s optional on the EV only.
Kia says the system learns the driver’s behavior over time, adjusting its behavior to your observed driving style.
From lower LX…wind and waves?
Basic hybrid models are built to be affordable to buy as well as run, starting at less than $30,000.
But Kia has carefully packaged features, equipment, and options into groups that allow buyers to easily move up to more luxurious models.
The Hybrid offers LX, EX ($2,600 more), and SX ($3,400 more) versions. The EX adds leather trim to the base cloth seats, a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats.
On the other hand, there are no the SX adds synthetic leather for a quieter ride, a power tailgate and laminated front glass, among other features.
An optional Touring package for the EX and SX adds 18-inch alloy wheels and a variety of appearance items.
2023 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid
Both hybrids have standard 16-inch wheels, 18-inch alloys are part of the Touring package. Both versions of the Niro EV use 17-inch wheels.
Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on all models, as are USB ports next to the front seats.
Wireless charging is an option. Higher grades include using a digital key on a smartphone or Apple Watch.
The Niro EV provides 120-volt power out through a standard US AC socket, up to 6.6 kW, the same as the EV6. We have used this function with several small electrical appliances and it works as advertised.
Heat pump and charging cord
The 2023 Niro Hybrid includes a “Green Zone” feature that maximizes the use of electric motors in schools, hospitals or other emission-sensitive areas.
Kia executives admit that if the battery doesn’t cost much, a “feather-light touch” on the accelerator tends to save the engine from the start.
A heat pump is optional on the Niro EV to improve energy efficiency in less warm climates.
If a charging station is entered into the navigation gadget as a destination, the EV can pre-heat its battery to a preferred temperature in order to obtain an overcharge of consumption – a shortening of the common area for a particular stage of charge.
2023 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid
The PHEV’s 11.1-kwh battery takes less than three hours to charge at a 240-volt level two charging station.
EV provides level two charging up to eleven kilowatts and DC fast charging up to eighty five kilowatts. Under optimal conditions, fast charging will take an EV’s battery from 10 to eighty percent in less than forty-five minutes.
Kia introduced that Niro EV drivers will get 500 kwh of complimentary DC speed charging on the Electrify America charging network—a superior offer, EV advocates say, to the unlimited free fast charging offered through some different manufacturers, which discourages owners.
Charging at home in one day as their important resort. Both the EV and PHEV variants come with a fashionable 120-volt transportable charging cord—something Kia has made a dealer-installed option on its EV6.
