 8.5/10C/D rating

High: Roomy cabin and ample cargo space, peppy V-6 powertrain, driver-and-safety assistance standard on every model.

Cons: While the lower trim lacks some desirable features and a great driving experience, other midsize SUVs ride better.

The Passport is a very practical and nicely equipped mid-size SUV, but it’s nothing special.

With ample cargo space and passenger accommodation, the 2022 Honda Passport is extremely practical.

Those who need more than two rows of seats may want to step up to the Passport’s first cousin, the three-row Honda Pilot, but otherwise, the Passport is delightfully capable in many ways.

All models feature an array of driver-assistance technologies, from adaptive cruise control to lane-keeping assist.

The only power source is a stout V-6 that isn’t particularly fuel-efficient, but it delivers decent acceleration.

While it’s never exciting to drive and its ride can be rough at times, the 2022 Passport is a largely satisfying commuter for families and all their gear.

 What’s new for 2022?

For 2022, Honda has addressed one of our biggest complaints about the Passport: its anonymous look.  Its front end is now bolder, thanks to a chunkier grille and squarer proportions, and its front and rear bumpers look tougher.

The new Trailsport model takes the off-road-inspired vibe even further with an exclusive 18-inch wheel-and-tire combo.  Also, it has slightly wider front and rear tracks which Honda says improves stability.

The rest of the lineup gets more subtle updates, including a new standard rear-seat reminder, and the EX-L trim now has contrast stitching on its leather-appointed seats.

Like the Honda Ridgeline, the Passport can now be equipped with the Honda Performance Development (HDP) appearance package, which includes a unique grille, black fender flares, specific wheels and an HDP graphic on the rear fender.

Even though the EX-L is technically the base model, it comes equipped with a plethora of desirable features such as leather upholstery, a sunroof, and a large touchscreen with smartphone-mirroring functionality. All-wheel drive is a $2000 option.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance: Best Family Car Honda

Under the hood are the same 280-hp 3.5-litre V-6 and nine-speed automatic transmission as found in the Pilot.

Those who want the all-terrain capability of all-wheel drive can add it for an extra coin; otherwise, the Passport is front-wheel drive.

The SUV boasts 7.5 inches of ground clearance (8.1 inches for all-wheel-drive models), and the Passport can tow up to 5000 pounds.

However, the two-row Honda has a rough ride when it does venture off-road, and its high ride height contributes to a top-heavy demeanour.

The Passport was quick in our testing, galloping to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, and it dutifully accelerates on the highway.

The ride is comfortable on most roads, and the steering is pleasingly direct, which makes the Passport feel nimble.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With a single engine choice and either front- or all-wheel drive, the Passport has two different EPA estimates. The front-drive model is expected to earn up to 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

A Passport with all-wheel drive does a little worse, with ratings of 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. We tested the latter on our 75-mph fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, where it exceeded its high.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo: Best family car Honda Passport

Anyone who has experienced the interior of the Ridgeline will be instantly familiar with the Passport’s cabin. Despite an unremarkable design, the materials are attractive enough and the controls are nicely organized.

Although we’d like more knobs and buttons instead of touchscreen controls. The front seats are wide and comfortable, with a handy armrest that can be adjusted for optimal comfort.

The back seat is also roomy and allows the Passport to transport up to five people. There are 41 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seat, which held 15 of our carry-on suitcases.

Folding that row unlocks 78 cubes of room and the capacity to carry 33 bags in total. Interior cubby storage in general is great thanks to useful bins throughout the cabin and a huge centre-console bin.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Passport sports an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It also includes necessities such as Bluetooth and is supplemented by a wireless phone charging pad.

A seven-speaker audio system is offered on EX-L and TrailSport models, while an upgraded 10-speaker audio system is offered on the range-topping Passport Elite.

A 115-volt outlet is also standard for TrailSport and Elite models. Buyers looking for Wi-Fi hotspot availability will have to opt for the Elite, as it is

The Passport also lacks complimentary scheduled maintenance.

A limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles

The powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
