What is Mind?

It’s difficult to answer in a word what is mind? The attributes that make up the mind are debated. Some psychologists argue that only the ” higher” intellectual functions constitute the mind, particularly reason and memory. So Our discussion in this post is mind – Brain and Depression.

The emotions – love, hate, fear and joy – are more primitive or subjective. It’s different from the mind as such.

Others argue that we can not separate various rational and emotional states. Because they’re of the same nature and origin. Therefore, it should be considered all part of it as mind.

  • Mind And Thought:

In popular usage, the Mind is frequently synonymous with thought. The private conversation with ourselves that carry on ‘ inside our heads.

Thus we ” make up our minds”, “change our minds” or are “of two minds” about something.

One of the key attributes of the mind in this sense is that it’s absolutely a private sphere. Therefore, no one but the owner has access to this sphere .

No one else can ” know our minds”. They can only interpret. So we consciously or unconsciously communicate.

This we can say, the mind is a set of cognitive faculties. They are including consciousness, imagination, perception, thinking, judgement, language and memory.

We can define it as the faculty of an entity’s thoughts and consciousness. It holds the power of imagination, recognition, and appreciation.

It is also responsible for processing feelings and emotions. It may result in attitudes and actions.

Moreover, we have a stream of consciousness in our minds. It’s a system where sense impressions and mental phenomena are constantly changing.

The Relation Between Mind And Brain and depression:

Mind and Brain are not the same. Our Brain is part of the visible, tangible world of the body. The Brain is the central processing unit of the Body. So it plays a key role in translating the content of the mind.

These are our thoughts, feelings, attitudes, beliefs, memories and imagination. The Brain acts as a translator.

This central processing unit of the body is translating the content of the mind into complex patterns of nerve cells. It is firing and releasing chemical.

What Is Cerebrum? Mind – Brain and Depression

The Cerebrum is the large outer part of the Brain. It controls reading, thinking, learning, speech, emotions.

It also helps to activate muscle movement like walking. Moreover, the cerebrum controls vision, hearing, and other senses.

So we can say that the mind, after all, is generally synonymous with our thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs. Therefore, it is the source of our behaviours.

It’s not made of the material. But we think of it as quite powerful, or even as who we are.

More Definition of The Brain:

We will try to discuss in detail about brain. Naturally, the brain is three – pounds slab of Tofu – Textured tissue inside our skull.

The physical source of all that we call the mind. If we are having a thought or experiencing an emotion, it’s because our brain has done something.

Specifically, electrical signals crackled along a whole bunch of neurons. These neurons handed off droplets of neurochemical like runners handing off a baton in a relay race.

Secondly, the Brain is a biological component of our body, whereas the mind comes from generations -, our ancestral elements.

Recently, I have gone through an article by Professor, B. N. Hegde ( Former Prof. Of Cardiology, University of London) –

” The way to get back on his feet ” in Hindu Daily dated 23.10. 2011.

The article says that through the mind we can transmit electromagnetic energy at a speed of 186000 miles per second. On the other hand, chemical energy is travelling at a speed of just one centimetre per second.

The miraculous thing is that the Brain is required for enabling our mind to do this travelling.

Moreover, living organisms must receive and interpret environmental signals to survive. The signal reaches the single cells through their antenna in the cell walls.

Therefore, our connection with the outer world is through the cell walls, ie. our true brain.

BRAIN DIES, BUT MIND NEVER:?( Mind – Brain and Depression)

Our brains die immediately on our death, whereas the mind never dies immediately. Sometimes it takes centuries for its death.

I think there is a very subtle difference between the brain and the mind. Perhaps it’s normally below our threshold level. So this difference is not brought to our perceptible level.

Ordinarily, there is no distinction between them. Only the regular practitioner of meditation and yoga can understand the difference between brain and mind clear. Otherwise, all is guesswork.

The Real Difference Between The Mind And Brain :

The real difference is that the brain is an organ whereas the mind is not. The mind is vested in the brain.

The mind generates thoughts, awareness of consciousness, feeling willpower, and reminiscences. It resides in the brain through electronic impulses. It can understand.

The brain, however, synchronises the individual actions. It helps to move, well – being and communicate information.

We think through the mind. Consequently, there is a connection between the mind and the brain. It leads to its differences.

Another difference is that the mind is an immortal component of the personality. The brain is the material component of the head. Though the mind is not the brain and the brain is not the mind.

However, there is a connection between both in the working processes in making meaning out of life and activities.

The Mind – Brain and Depression /Meditation:

As the mind is an involuntary function. So It is associated with emotions. The practise of meditation and yoga can indeed control involuntary functions.

During the advanced stage of practising meditation and yoga mind comes under the control of meditators.

 What does Sri Aurobindo say?

According to Sri Aurobindo, the great Indian Seer says: in yoga, one can isolate the mind. Watch its workings under a microscope. Separate every minute function of the various parts of the inner organ. Even notice every mental and moral faculty.
