Introduction: How to handle controversy meticulously & win
Dr. Sushil Rudra
How to avoid controversy? Undoubtedly it’s a difficult task we face on and on in the course of our daily lives. We become puzzled and won’t be able to handle it properly.
The following strategies can help you maintain the focus and flow of the discussion during a controversial subject.
Begin the discussion with clear, open-ended but bounded questions that encourage discussion.
Avoid “double-barreled questions” which pose two problems simultaneously, or “hide the ball” questions that search for a specific answer.
Ask questions that prompt multiple answers rather than short factual responses or simple “yes” or “no” replies.
Prepare specific questions to use if the listeners are silent or hesitant about speaking. Some examples include: “What makes this hard to discuss?” and “What needs to be clarified at this point?”
Encourage listeners or pertcipants to elaborate upon their comments where needed. With probing questions, an instructor can prompt them to share more specific information, clarify an idea, elaborate on a point, or provide further explanation.
Be prepared to redirect the discussion if they go beyond the intended focus. Drawing attention to the readings of the subject or reminding the meeting about the discussion objectives are useful management techniques.
When participants raise points that are extraneous to the focus, note that these are important but tangential.
Recap them at the end of season as other topics to think about on one’s own, to validate participants’ contributions.
Recap the key discussion points or issues at the end of the meeting, in writing if possible.
Here’s some practical story we should follow up while we are to face such a difficult situation.
Padma Bhushan Sudha Murthy is a distinguished writer and professor. She told the process to her husband Narayan Murthy and son-in-law Rishi how to tackle odd situations and overcome controversy.
Sudha married Narayan Murthy in 1978. Then in 1981, Sudha Murthy gave 10 thousand rupees to Swami Narayan Murthy to form Infosys.
Recently, writer Sudha Murthy has been awarded the Padma Bhushan this year. Sudha gave some advice in an interview given to the news channel NDTV.
Sudha gave several messages to husband and Infosys founder Narayan Murthy, daughter Akshta Murthy and son-in-law and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on how to avoid controversy.
He said, ‘People in the limelight will always be involved in controversy.’ Sudha’s message in this atmosphere is, ‘Principally correct and sincere work should be done.’ He also said that one should be patient in any situation.
I have told you before that Sudha Murthy gave 10 thousand rupees to Swami Narayan Murthy to form Infosys. That company is one of the most famous technology companies in the world today.
However, the Murthy family has been involved in controversy for several reasons in the past few days.
Rishi’s wife and Narayan Murthy’s daughter Akshta owns shares in Infosys. Despite the income from this company, she does not pay income tax in Britain as she is not a resident there.
Meanwhile, Infosys has continued its business in Russia despite the war in Ukraine. Controversies were created on such issues. But in the midst of all those controversies, Rishi Sunak became the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of Britain.
Eventually, Rishi’s mother-in-law Sudha Murthy told the news channel, ‘Everyone has some special powers, but there are also some limitations with it.’
Sudha’s message to Indian women, ‘I want to say to all Indian women, once a baby comes into your life, they are the priority.
Then when you rejoin the job, you can’t join that old level. But remember, age is no barrier. Your passion can take you to the top.’
Citing his own example, he said, ‘When I took a back seat in my career, I never thought my career as a writer would go this far. I was a technocrat. So walking this path was difficult for me. But I didn’t stop.’
Note that Sudha Murthy has written about 20 books related to computer science. Several TV series have also been made from it.
Talking about investing in her husband’s company in 1981, Sudha said, ‘I invested in his dream. If it was not successful, we would go back to our house.
All I wanted was a two-room house and a scooter.’ Talking about getting rich, he said, ‘Money is very necessary. If you have money you can help others.
However, it is not the case that only if there is money, it should be shown. There were many rich people before me. Many riches will come even after reading me.’
